Région Sud hosts a key event ahead of the UN Ocean Conference in Nice

As part of its commitment to ocean preservation, Région Sud will host the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) in Nice from June 7 to 10. In anticipation of this major international event, the Region organized the Agora “Demain le Sud – What Solutions for a Sustainable Mediterranean?” on May 20 at the Regional Hotel in Marseille.

This gathering served as a unique platform for bringing together dedicated stakeholders working to protect marine environments. The goal was to foster a shared vision and promote innovative solutions for a healthier Mediterranean Sea.

Discussions at the Agora focused on key themes such as the role of local actors in ocean conservation, the development of a sustainable blue economy, and the importance of a collective vision for the future of the Mediterranean. These conversations also marked the 50th anniversary of the Barcelona Convention, which remains a cornerstone in the protection of the Mediterranean marine environment.

Among the speakers was Elizabeth, representing the Mediterranean Youth Council (MYC). In her address, she introduced the mission and activities of the MYC and highlighted the vital importance of the Mediterranean Sea—not only as an ecological treasure but also as a core element of regional identity. She called for an integrated, cross-sectoral approach to addressing Mediterranean issues, emphasizing the need to respect biodiversity and foster a sense of shared responsibility.

Elizabeth also shared her experience aboard the MED25 Bel Espoir project, where participants engaged as equals, opening up a space for transnational and local dialogue. Her reflections underscored the importance of building bridges between both shores of the Mediterranean and advancing cooperation through inclusive, youth-driven engagement.
